With the right care and maintenance, you’ll have a beautiful heirloom piece you can pass down the generations.
We encourage you to handle your jewellery mindfully to maintain its sparkle and shine. That way it will look the same as the day you received it.
But it is important to remember that nothing appreciates being knocked around — even the hardest materials on Earth.
Jewellery, like anything else can show signs of wear and tear over its lifetime. But by taking the time to read this care guide, you can preserve your jewellery for decades to come.
To main the sparkle of your jewellery, we recommend you avoid any form of material that can form a film over the gemstone or precious metal. This includes soap, moisturiser, sunblock and cooking ingredients such as oil and salt water. These films will reduce the sparkle of your gemstone and the shine of your precious metal.
We recommend you remove your jewellery when going through your daily skin routines, while cooking and playing sports.
When anything hits or catches on your jewellery (especially during sports and other physical activities), it can distort or damage the setting.
It is important to check your jewellery often to make sure the settings are secure — especially gemstone claw settings. If you find any loose settings please reach out to us to arrange for your jewellery to be professionally serviced.
As part of your purchase, we offer an annual inspection and clean for free.
Over time, you can have your jewellery repolished but we recommend this every five years. If repolishing is done too frequently, your jewellery will become worn down.
Between professional cleans, you can clean your jewellery at home with warm water, a soft bristle toothbrush and dish soap. From there, place your jewellery on a clean microfibre cloth to dry.
When your jeweller completes making your jewellery, they highly polish any metal surface. Due to the sensitivity of the polish and nature of precious metals, it can become dull and marked over time. This wear is part of the natural ageing of your jewellery, but with care the worst damage can be avoided.
Precious metals used in jewellery vary in hardness but are all considered ‘soft metals’ and are susceptible to marks, scratches, dents and deformation. Hitting your jewellery against any hard surface may result in dents and marks.
Some scenarios to be aware of are: lifting heavy things, clapping hands with rings on both hands and exercising with your jewellery (especially when lifting weights).
Even with lots of care, jewellery can become damaged and in need of repair. For jewellery that was made by us, we can provide repair services if needed. If the damage is deemed to be a manufacturing fault, we will repair the jewellery free of charge — otherwise charges may apply.
While all gemstones are considered incredibly hard, at the right angles, they can chip and break. Additionally, particular gemstones such as black diamonds, some emeralds, tanzanite and other ‘softer stones’ are delicate. They need to be kept away from high temperatures, ultrasonic cleaners and abrasive chemicals.
All metals have the potential to relax after the initial setting process. This means settings can becomes loose and small stones may fall out. This relaxing can’t be predicted and doesn’t occur in every setting.
If you notice your gemstone being loose in the first few months, bring it to Four Words as soon as possible. We will reset your stone free of charge. Also, it is important to bring your jewellery specifically to Four Words for your jewellery to be set by us. Not doing so will void any warranties.
Care should be taken to make sure your correct ring size is ordered before purchasing any rings to avoid unnecessary resizing. In the case of resizing a ring, please note that a faint line can sometimes be visible at the join.
We cannot resize full eternity bands, clusters and pave rings more than 2 sizes. Your ring will need to be fully remade and will incur a cost.
At Four Words, we are committed to maintaining your jewellery’s sparkle for a lifetime. We encourage you to come by our studio once a year for your ring to be reviewed and cleaned.
Your jewellery will be exposed to a lot throughout its life, and for this reason we like to regularly examine all aspects of the piece to ensure it is kept in top condition.
We will also advise you if any other maintenance or repair work is required. Please note that any additional work may incur a charge.
