I know. That’s a strange thing for the founder of a jewellery company to say.
Obviously, we make jewellery. But I’ve never thought of Four Words as a traditional jewellery company, with a showcase full of pre-made rings and a stockroom full of diamonds.
We’re a design company and makes engagement rings.
That probably sounds a little pretentious, but I'll explain a little further down.
Before Four Words existed, I was trying to create an engagement ring for my wife, Shivana. She’s the one in the photo above — and you’ve probably seen her face on our socials.
She’d given me enough clues to point me in the right direction, but she left the details to me. Which was lovely in theory and a bit daunting in practice.
I knew I wanted something bespoke. Something that felt personal to her.
The ring I wanted didn’t exist yet, so I set out to create it. Probably a bit like you, if you’re reading this.
I looked everywhere. From the big chains to the beautiful independent boutiques. There were plenty of rings, but nothing really felt like her. I needed help turning a handful of ideas Shivana had given me into a design that felt like hers, and that nobody else had.
A bit worn out, I eventually found an old design online that felt closer to Shivana than anything else I’d seen. It was no longer being made, so I found a local jeweller and worked with them to recreate it for her.
Shivana loved it.
To be fair, she probably would have loved a pebble if I’d given it to her, but it worked out nonetheless.
Still, I came away feeling a little unsatisfied.
I’d found a workaround, but not the thoughtful design service I had been looking for.
This is a bit werid?
I didn’t think much more about the process until one of my close friends, and now business partner, was getting ready to propose.
He asked what I’d done for Shiv's ring, so I talked him through the whole thing. Wanting something bespoke, how there wasn't anything really interesting out there at the time and how I had to do it myself.
Then he asked the question that set everything in motion.
“It’s a bit weird that this kind of thing doesn’t already exist, don’t you think?”
It was weird, why didn't it exist.
We had a business that wasn't doing so well at the time and thought, why not us.
That was back in 2021, we've come a long way.
These days, Four Words is much bigger than a couple of people helping people make engagement rings from my parents downstairs flat.
We’re a full team of people helping customers around New Zealand and the world create engagement rings, wedding rings and other pieces that mark the moments they don’t want to forget.
We’ve worked with people who arrive carrying detailed sketches and people who begin the conversation by saying, “I honestly have no idea.”
Both are good places to start.
We’ve created quiet, classic pieces and wonderfully unconventional ones and everything in between.
The easiest way I can explain Four Words is to compare us to an architect.
An architect doesn’t begin with a finished house and ask you to choose one. They ask how you live, what you like, what the site allows and what constraints they need to work within. Then they bring all of it together into one coherent design. Even when they are designing a house as to sell, its designed with a specific type of person in mind.
That’s how we approach jewellery.
We begin by asking questions.
Who will be wearing it? What do they wear every day? What do your references have in common? What do they definitely not want? Is there a personal detail that belongs in the design?
From there, we help you work through the shape, proportions, stone, metal and all the tiny decisions you probably didn’t realise existed until you started looking for a ring.
Some of those decisions are practical. Some are aesthetic. Some are strangely emotional.
Our job is to bring them together into one coherent design.
Then, depending on the piece, we work with the right production partners to bring it to life.
Thats all well and good to say, but what does that mean in practice.
None of this is there to make the process look impressive or complicated.
It’s there to make the decisions feel simpler and make the experience of getting a ring feel as good as wearing the ring itself — whether you're designing something for yourself or for a loved one.
The entire experience, and how you felt throughout it, could be designed too.
Because when I was looking for Shiv's ring, that was the part I felt was missing.
So if you're just starting out and have no idea or have a specific vision in mind, come and talk to us, it's why we exist.
