Choosing the right diamond doesn't need to be complicated.

Getting bogged down by the details of diamond grading is easy, this guide takes a different approach.

This page goes into the detail behind the recommendations we make. We've kept it as concise as we can, but the detail is here if you want it.

Diamond grades are useful for selling, not buying.

The 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity, and carat — were developed so that diamonds could be described and compared consistently, regardless of who was selling them. It meant a dealer in Botswana could sell a diamond to a wholesaler in Hong Kong and both parties understood exactly what was being traded and how how to price it.

Useful for diamond dealers but not a great purchasing guide.

The problem is that the 4Cs focus on specifications rather than how a diamond actually looks. Past certain thresholds, differences between grades are invisible to the naked eye, useful for selling, not for buying.

The grades were also built around natural, round brilliant diamonds. The market has shifted considerably since. Lab-grown diamonds are now a dominant part of the market and fancy shapes like ovals have become far more popular than the round brilliant diamond cut. The grades haven't kept up.

They're a useful starting point, but there are other variables, sometimes more important ones, that grades don't capture.

This guide covers the things that affect how a diamond looks in real life, which trade-offs are worth making and what you should prioritise.

There are clear recommendations throughout, but the choice is ultimately yours.

Lab or natural, there's no wrong answer.

At an atomic level, a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond are the same thing. Same crystal structure, same optical properties, same hardness.

The only difference is where they came from. One grew in the earth over billions of years, the other was grown in a controlled environment in a matter of weeks.

A gemologist with a loupe can't tell them apart, and you won't be able to either.

The price difference, though, is significant. Lab diamonds cost considerably less than natural diamonds, with the gap getting bigger as you go up in quality and size. You can see the difference yourself when you select a stone in a ring design on the site.

Choose natural if you love the romantic meaning behind it.

Why would anyone choose natural?

The frank answer is that it's not a rational decision, and that's fine. Engagement rings aren't rational purchases. If the romantic idea of wearing or gifting something that was formed in the earth over billions of years feels meaningful to you, that's a legitimate reason to choose it.

Origin has value if origin matters to you.

Diamonds aren't an investment.

There's an misconception that natural diamonds hold their value. They don't, at least not in the way the framing implies.

Wholesale diamond prices have broadly tracked inflation over time, thats true, but you're not buying at wholesale. The moment a piece of jewellery changes hands, it's worth less than what you bought it for. That's true of most things you buy, and it's not something to be troubled by. Just don't let it be the reason you spend more than you're comfortable with.

Investment-grade diamonds exist, but that's a specialist category and almost certainly not what you're buying.

The diamond industry has leaned on the investment framing to get buyers to spend more than they're comfortable with. It's worth knowing that before you're in that conversation.

You can choose both on the site.

Both lab and natural diamonds are available across the full range of designs. The decision comes down to what matters to you, and there's no wrong answer. 

Reframing the 4Cs

This section goes into the detail of the 4Cs and beyond the report and our recommendation for each.

Colour — colourless to the naked eye.

Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) to Z (visibly yellow or brown).

The grade is determined by placing the diamond upside down under specific lighting conditions, which has very little to do with how a diamond actually looks in a ring.

The simpler way to think about it is that either a diamond is colourless to the naked eye or it doesn't. Approach colour this way and most of the complexity goes away.

We tested across different sizes, shapes, and facet patterns and mapping the results back to the grading scale to come to the recommendation

Our recommendation.

  • Natural diamonds: minimum H colour.
  • Lab diamonds: minimum F colour.

H lab diamonds will still face up colourless, but diamonds in those grades are uncommon in the market (and if they do they have other defects), so the recommendation reflects what you can actually buy.

Some people prefer warmer diamonds or specific fancy colours (like pinks, blues, yellows, greens). You can filter specifically for these in our lab and natural diamond lists. Some fancy colours like champagne may need to be specifically sourced, for requests like this please contact us.

Clarity — eye-clean is enough.

Clarity grades describe the presence of inclusions. These are small internal voids that form as a diamond grows. The grades run from Flawless (no inclusions visible under 10x magnification) down to I3 (inclusions visible to the naked eye).

Again, you can simplify this and aim for one thing, a diamond that's eye-clean. Eye-clean means no inclusions are visible to the naked eye. Going up a grade from there just removes inclusions that are only visible under magnification.

An eye-clean SI1 looks the same as a VVS2 diamond in a finished setting. The price difference between them can be considerable, especially in natural diamonds.

Our recommendation.
  • Natural diamonds: minimum SI1.
  • Lab diamonds: minimum VS1.

For natural diamonds an SI1 eye clean diamond offers excellent value, you're not paying a premium for inclusions you can only see under a loupe.

For lab diamonds, like with colour, the majority of good quality lab diamonds available in the market sit at VS1 or higher, and there's very little discount for going lower.

The catch with clarity is that the grade alone doesn't tell you whether a stone is eye-clean. Two SI1 diamonds can be graded the same but look different. One might have an inclusion sitting near the back of the stone where it's not visible, the other might have a visible mark on the face of the stone so you can see it without magnification.

The grade is about the presence, size, and number of inclusions, but not where they are or whether they're visible.

Every diamond on our website has been physically checked for eye-cleanliness, and any stone that isn't eye-clean has been filtered out automatically.

So no matter which diamond you pick from the list, it'll be eye-clean. While we’re confident in our choices, all stones are re-checked post purchase and we’ll email you if we do find any concerns. 

Note when you are browsing, the videos on the diamond lists are heavily magnified, so you'll likely see microscopic inclusions even on higher-grade stones. Since all our stones are eye-clean, those inclusions won't be visible to the naked eye in person.

Carat — a personal choice.

Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Most of the time carat weight is a good approximation for face-up size, but this isn't always the case.

A diamond cut to deep with more weight in belly means it looks smaller from above. A diamond cut shallower will make a diamond look bigger, but look glassy and lifeless.

If a stone meets our cut thresholds covered below, you don't need to worry about this. The proportions are good and the stone looks its weight.

One thing that isn't intuitive is that shape matters too. At the same carat weight, an oval diamond looks bigger than a round and a marquise looks bigger than an oval. It's because the elongated shapes have more weight on the surface than the belly. It's not a huge amount of difference, but it is something to consider.

Beyond that, carat is a personal choice and the variable with the biggest impact on price.

The best way to get it right is to try sizes on in person, or order a 3D-printed version of the design if you're tossing up between sizes.

Marquise diamonds are cut shallower so they look bigger than rounds for the same carat weight. Both round and marquise diamonds in the video are 1.5ct.

Cut — the most important and confusing.

Cut is how well a diamond is proportioned and faceted to return light. A well-cut diamond is bright, even, and looks alive. A poorly-cut one looks glassy or lifeless, regardless of what its colour or clarity grade says.

It's also, unfortunately, the most confusing of the four Cs. Two things worth clarifying first.

First: cut refers to the internal facet pattern of the stone, not its shape. Throughout this guide, that's what cut means.

Second: cut grading was developed for round diamonds only. Fancy shapes like ovals, pears, cushions, and others don't come with an official cut grade from the grading labs. And even for rounds, the terminology isn't consistent. GIA's highest cut grade is Excellent, and IGI's highest is Ideal, with Excellent as their second highest. The same word meaning different things.

Why aren't all diamonds cut to the highest standard? It's a fair question. There are two reasons.

The first, more common in natural diamonds, is rough stone economics.

When a diamond is dug up from the ground, it comes with inclusions and voids throughout it. Cutters map out how to get the most value from each rough stone, and often that means compromising on cut to preserve carat weight, or to avoid an inclusion that would drop the clarity grade. A heavier, higher-clarity stone gets a higher price at wholesale than a beautifully cut one at a lower weight.

The second reason is that diamond cutting isn't automated. The final faceting is done by hand, by a skilled cutter, and as with anything that requires skill, there's a wide range in execution.

Because there's no consistent, independent standard for cut across all shapes, a grading lab certificate alone isn't enough to assess how a stone actually performs.

We've developed our own system to help — Light Return

Working with diamond cutters and researchers, we've developed our own set of angles and proportions for every shape we offer, which allows each stone to be assessed against its own standard.

The result is a grade is something we call Light Return. Every diamond listed on our website comes with both its official lab grade and a Light Return grade.

How that grade is used in the stone recommendations is covered in the next section.

Some things don't show up on the grading report.

Every diamond on our website has been pre-filtered for the issues below. This section is just here to explain what that filter actually covers.

A grading certificate only covers cut, colour, clarity, and carat. But there’s a separate set of characteristics, all visual, that don't appear on the report and significantly affect how a diamond looks in a finished ring. They're easy to miss online, partly because the diamond videos don't do a good job of showing them and because most people don't know what they're looking for.

The filter applied to every diamond listed here removes stones with any of the following. The list is here for transparency, not because you need to assess it yourself.

Brown, Green, or Milky tones (BGM).

A faint brown, green, or milky cast that makes a stone look dull or off-tone, even when the colour grade says it's colourless. Found in both lab and natural diamonds. Doesn't appear on the certificate and is often hidden in product videos.

Unnatural undertones in lab diamonds.

Really cheap lab diamonds can have undertones — grey, brown, blue, or green — that don't appear on the grading report. Grey is the most common. Product videos often use grey backgrounds, which makes it harder to spot.

CVD strain and striations.

A defect specific to lab diamonds grown using the CVD method. When the growing process is shortened to cut cost, the stone can show internal strain which is visible as faint streaks, blurred patches, or a slightly out-of-focus look. None of this appears in the clarity grade.This type of strain exists in a spectrum so it’s about filtering out the ones which will be visible and affect the look of the diamond. 

Bow-tie, windowing, and extinction.

Cut-related defects that affect both lab and natural diamonds. When a stone is cut poorly, light escapes through the bottom of the diamond rather than bouncing back to the eye, which shows up as dark zones (strong bow-ties), see-through patches (windowing), or dead spots (extinction).

Note that the bow-tie effect can be played up online. Bow-tie sits on a spectrum, and nearly all elongated shapes have some degree of it. We've experimented with cutting diamonds without any bow-tie, but the stones ended up looking flat. You need a little bit of contrast to give a diamond depth. What you want to avoid is a strong bow-tie where there are dead zones.

Light Return, a simpler way to think about Cut.

Cut is the most important of the 4Cs, but as covered earlier, it's also the most confusing.

Different labs grade cut differently, fancy shapes don't get an official cut grade at all, and even within a single grade there's differences in how stones actually look.

The underlying thing that matters, the thing cut is meant to be measuring, is how much a diamond sparkles.

Sparkle is a function of geometry. The angles and proportions of the facets determine how well the stone captures light and returns it to the eye. A well-cut stone returns light efficently, where a poorly-cut stone leaks light through the bottom and looks dull as a result.

To make it easier to check how much a diamond will sparkle across every shape we offer, we've developed an in-house grading system called Light Return.

It applies the same geometric principles a cut grade is meant to capture, but adapted to every shape, not just rounds.

For every diamond we list we have a Light Return grade along with its cut grade to help you make a choice.

Diamonds come in colours too.

Most of this guide is about colourless diamonds, because that's what most people are after. But diamonds also come in colours — pinks, blues, greens, yellows — and these are available on our website alongside the colourless stones.

The same principles covered above still apply. Every coloured diamond goes through the same baseline filters, so it'll be eye-clean, free of defects, and well cut. The only real difference is the colour itself, which varies in intensity and shade. You might prefer a soft, light pink or a deeper, more saturated one. It's purely personal preference, which is why there are no recommendation tiers here the way there are for colourless diamonds.

Because of the baseline filters, whichever stone you choose will be a good one. The decision is just colour and intensity, so have a look through the list and see what catches your eye.

One thing worth knowing. Colour can be harder to judge from standard videos. If you see a coloured diamond on the website you're seriously interested in, get in touch, and with a deposit we can usually arrange a tweezer video in natural light, which shows the colour far more accurately.

Natural coloured diamonds requires specialised sourcing.

Everything above refers to lab coloured diamonds. Natural coloured diamonds are very rare and nuanced, and require specialist sourcing and negotiation with suppliers. We do have some natural coloured diamonds on the website, which certain suppliers have made public to give a sense of pricing, but often the best natural coloured diamonds aren't listed publicly. If a natural coloured diamond is what you're after, reach out and the team can look into sourcing options for you.

If you can't find the exact diamond in either shape, size or colour you want, we can custom cut one for you.

Everything covered so far assumes you're choosing from stones that already exist. But with lab diamonds, there's another option. A stone can be custom-cut to your specification.

That means any shape, any size, any ratio you want, within what's practically possible.

If you're after a particular elongated oval, a specific cut that isn't widely available, or one of the more unusual shapes that rarely show up in standard supplier lists, it can be made.

It also opens up unique shapes and cuts you won't really see anywhere else. If a design on our website uses this type of diamond, it'll be flagged that the stone will need to be custom-cut.

Custom cut diamonds often don't cost extra.

A custom-cut stone is priced similar to pre-cut stone. It just takes a little longer to make, because the stone is cut to order rather than sourced.

This is only possible with lab diamonds for the time being. Diamond cutters are hesitant to custom-cut natural stones because there's more material loss involved.

For natural diamonds, GIA, which is the standard for natural stones.

For lab diamonds, IGI, which is the market leader and grades lab-grown stones more consistently than GIA does.

You'll see the lab noted on each stone. In practice the differences between the major labs aren't something you need to worry about.

Feature stones and diamonds above 0.5ct are independently certified.

Smaller accent and side stones generally aren't, because certification isn't standard at that size, but they will be matched to the feature stone(s).

Both lab and natural diamonds here are sourced through vetted suppliers whose supply chains have been assessed for ethical practice.

Yes. A lab diamond is chemically and physically a diamond, so it tests as one on a standard diamond tester. The only way to distinguish a lab stone from a natural one is with specialist equipment.

If you've sourced a stone yourself, that can be worked with too. In both cases there's an additional cost, because the stone hasn't been sourced through us, and sourcing is normally built into the price.
