Designed from scratch specifically for you.

Refined over 4,000+ designs, here's how our bespoke process works.

Bespoke is what we're known for.

Designing a ring from scratch can feel daunting. After working with thousands of bespoke clients, the same questions come up every time.

What will it actually look like? How much will it cost? Will you understand what I'm after? What if I end up with something I don't love?

A no risk approach to bespoke.

To give you peace of mind when designing your ring. Heres what we offer.

  • Refundable design deposits. If during our design phases we can't quite match your vision, we will refund you the deposit without any obligations.
  • No additional design fees. There is no additional cost to work with us bespoke. Pricing is based on materials, labour and complexity of design.
  • No limit on revisions. During our concept phase there is no limit on revisions (within reason) to help get your design right.
  • A complementary 3D printed model. Try on a 3D printed physical replica of your design before committing getting it made.
  • Dedicated design team. You'll have a three-person design team (design consultant, technical designer and co-ordinator) to help develop your design, keep things on track and be there for you to help with any questions.

We've developed five clear stages to help create your bespoke ring without feeling overwhelmed with the decisions. The sections below go into them in detail.

1. Consultation.

Book a 40-minute session, in person at the studio or virtually.

The goal is to establish a brief. What you're looking for and what materials are suitable. From that, your design team can give you a realistic estimate on price, recommend the right pathway, and outline how long the process will take.

If you're in the studio, you can try on sample rings from our collection and more. It's the fastest way to figure out what feels right and what you're drawn to.

Design consultations are complementary with no obligations.

Outcome: A design brief with price estimates and timelines.

2. Concept designs.

We start by developing a series of concept sketches based on your brief, each one exploring a different direction.

From there, it's a back and forth. You tell us what's working and what isn't, and we refine. Sometimes that means small adjustments, sometimes it means going back to the drawing board.

There's no limit on revisions at this stage, because this is where the big design decisions get made.

To start design we require a $350 refundable deposit. This is not an additional fee and is taken off the final amount and is refundable if we cannot reach a design you are completely happy with.

Outcome: A concept design you are completely happy with.

3. Detailed designs.

Once the concept is agreed, we build it into a production-ready 3D model. This is the exact design that gets made.

You'll see it as a photorealistic render, on a hand and from every angle, with accurate proportions and materials

From here, it's about small tweaks. The big design decisions are already made, so this stage is about refining the finer details until everything looks right.

There's also the option of a 3D-printed model if you want to see how it feels on the hand.

Outcome: An agreed, detailed production ready design.

4. Sourcing.

Your design team will recommend stones that suit the design or you can browse the full selection select one yourself if you like. Our material guides go into detail about our recommendations.

Every stone is priced individually, so you'll see the exact cost of the stone and the finished ring before committing.

To confirm a design an 80% deposit is required to purchase the selected materials and move to production.

Outcome: Stones and materials selected with a final fixed price.

5. Production & delivery.

Once production is confirmed, your ring goes into the queue, and you'll receive an estimated completion date upfront.

We guarantee production within 8 weeks. If you would like it earlier, you can pay a rush fee. You can read more about timelines and rush orders here.

Once the ring is finished and has passed a final quality checks, you can collect it from the studio or have it delivered.

The final payment is due on completion.

Absolutely amazing service. I worked with Four Words for weeks designing my perfect ring, with them patiently meeting all my requests and tweaks. They were able to use a heritage stone in my ring as well which was incredibly special. I love my ring so much!

Fantastic experience with the team. I went in with some ideas that didn't feel 100%, but with their help and guidance we created something truly special. The compliment's my wife has received has been overwhelming but more importantly. She loves it.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience working with Vinny and the team. They were endlessly patient (even enthusiastic) with our many redesigns and we ended up with an amazing final product we couldn't have gotten elsewhere!

Four Words is by far the best and easiest solution for a custom design ring. The staff were so lovely and made the process such a breeze.

FAQs.

Not necessarily. The cost of a ring is driven by the design complexity, stone, and materials. A simple bespoke solitaire can cost the same as a collection piece with the same stone and metal. You'll know the expected cost before you commit.

Design and sourcing typically takes 1–4 weeks. Production takes up to 8 weeks. Most bespoke projects are finished within 10–14 weeks from first conversation to finished ring.

If you're working to a deadline, expedited production is available for an additional fee.

Design is a iterative process so it may take a few goes to get alignment and get it right.

If you think we're not quite getting it, the design deposit is fully refundable.

The $350 design deposit is fully refundable. You're not committed to anything until you've seen the concept sketches and approved the detailed design. If at any point it's not right, you can walk away.

No. Most people don't. The consultation is designed to help shape the brief. That's the whole point of it. That said, it helps to have browsed a few things beforehand, whether that's the collection, Instagram, or just saving images you're drawn to online. You don't need a clear direction, just a sense of the vibe.

Yes a minimum spend of NZ$2,000 is required either individually or in aggregate (multiple items totalling to $2,000).

Bespoke starts from scratch: concept sketches and detailed design, the full creative process. Customise starts with an existing design and refines it. If you've seen something you like and want to adjust it, customise is the faster route. If you want something completely original, bespoke is the path.

Yes. The bespoke process works for wedding bands, necklaces, earrings, and other fine jewellery. The same process applies.

You can supply your own stone, though there's an additional fee involved and in most cases it's simpler and more cost-effective if we source it for you. If you have an heirloom stone or piece of jewellery you'd like to incorporate, that's something we can work with too, though there are some limitations.
